Why Is It So Hard? – Car Titles

In any vehicle sale, the seller transfers title to the buyer. Regardless, if the vehicle is sold at auction, a private sale, or from a dealer, this exchange takes place. Kunes Auto Group License and Title Manager, Cynara Kluever, told us how the company handles transferring titles when it comes to buying and selling vehicles. We spoke about challenges that often arise and how those obstacles are handled within the group. One of the biggest challenges, she explained, is that every title exchange is different and has its own issues. This, of course, is amplified when we do a state to state transfer. When a car is transferred across state lines, lots of paperwork has to be completed and sent to the state for approval, and then back to the auto group to finish the job. This sometimes can take several weeks, or even months, to complete.

We all know that this process is not a simple one and can be frustrating and stressful for both parties at times. 

For example, on May 12th, 2022, Carvana was stripped of its dealer license in the state of Illinois for selling vehicles without having the title, among other titling issues. Several states have already enacted or threatened disciplinary measures against the online used car retailer, including North Carolina, Florida, and Michigan. Dealing with the transfer of titles can be a time consuming matter. For companies buying and selling vehicles from across the country, this issue is much more prevalent. This industry sees a lot of mistakes that come from selling vehicles without a title. As a result, the customer is left with a vehicle that can’t be driven or takes the risk of driving without a title.
